In the original HMC book, the universe in which the story takes place is a universe parallel to our own, so the cultures would have some similarity.
I did take some inspiration from Māori culture, as well as from Samoan culture and the Kanaks of New Calcedonia. I'm glad you enjoyed Remus' fantasy-Polynesian background.
